Daisy Potter is a 27 year old, self taught Portrait Artist living in Hove. With a background in textiles (print and knit), surface texture and vibrant colours are something that she carries over into her paintings. She featured as a contestant on Portrait Artist of the Year 2020 painting Fleabag’s Sian Clifford. As well as paintings she enjoys other creative outlets such as making clothing on her knitting machine and experimenting with ceramics.
In her work she mostly uses acrylic paint on canvas, but more frequently she has been layering on top with soft pastels. After experiencing a long period of depression, brought on by a traumatic event, she felt impelled to capture herself at that time in a portrait. She found it incredibly therapeutic. It drew her to understand that others would have stories under the surface and she wanted to capture and celebrate their fights and victories in portraiture. She is especially inspired by women. Her technique is unplanned. She paints and layers and correct and don’t stop until she recognises what she had been trying to capture, the essence of the sitter. Her style is a contrast of vibrant joyous colour and bold graphic lines, to draw the viewer to the gaze of the sitter.
