Metropolis Contemporary is thrilled to present its new exhibitions: “Tell my Story” by Naledi Modupi and Naomi Vona.
South African artist Naledi Modupi creates colorful portraits to celebrate black beauty. She conveys individuality and personality to her subject through basic shapes and colors in a semi-abstract style. With her work she claims representation for black women and she creates a positive and empowering narrative for African people. As a dark skinned black woman, she uses her identity and experiences as the central theme of her work. In this way, she promotes sustained conversations about black women in society, in a direction that emphasises and celebrates their stories.
London based artist Naomi Vona defines herself an “archival parasite with no bad intentions”. Working with vintage photos or fashion advertising she transforms the images through bright colours and repetitive patterns that are the fundamental of her unique visual code. Having no information about the people in the photos, she celebrates those “forgotten memories” by inventing ironic and humorous background stories that give them new life and purpose. The archival material gives Naomi the possibility to play with the idea of time, using her collages as time travel portals.
The Exhibition will run from 01 October until 23 November.
